Choose a few and stay consistent. Also, backgrounds shouldn't be extremely bright and colorful. One or two colors will do, but don't push the limit. The text might turn unreadable.

- Don't overuse pictures. They slow down the loading time of the page. Visitors can get bored and leave the whole website if it's too slow.

- Don't use blinking text. It's disturbing for the eyes.

- Don't keep changing the font and text size. Writing each page with a different font and text size is definitely not a good idea. The website has to look neat and organized. Just change the font and size when you want to emphasize something, for titles and subtitles.

- Don't underline words that don't lead to links. In a visitor's perception all underlined words lead to a related article. If you really want to emphasize something, you should better use the bolding or italic option.

- Don't use music. It's really unpleasant when you click on a website and you hear loud music. The visitor might disturb co-workers or members of their household. No one wants to hear music automatically. If you really want to share some songs, add a player that will get activated only if the visitor clicks on it.

- Do ask for opinions regarding the site. Ask a few friends or family members to give you their honest opinion.
